Professional Education Programs
- Dr. Mittan offers a variety of professional education programs including everything from epilepsy basics through information about the emotional, family, social, workplace, and school impact of seizures. These presentations also include training in how to teach patients and their families about epilepsy, medications, first aid, surgery for epilepsy, and many other topics.
Training Programs
- Professional groups often have specific training needs. Dr. Mittan has trained school nurses about managing seizures and epilepsy in the classroom; Driving Safety Examiners in evaluating persons with epilepsy for driver’s licenses; Residential Living Staff on managing the resident with epilepsy; Psychologists and Social Workers regarding how to help persons with epilepsy and their families cope with epilepsy in their everyday lives, and Nurses regarding teaching patients and families about compliance, first aid, status epilepticus, and SUDEP.
Educating the Educator
- The most popular special presentation Dr. Mittan gives is “Dr. Bob’s Ten Left-Handed Rules for Patient Education.” This program teaches the principles behind effective patient education from the S.E.E. point of view. The S.E.E. program is an innovative and award winning patient and family education program. How does it work? How was it designed? Most important, what are the techniques used in S.E.E. that can be used in the office or consulting room? How can these techniques be adapted to educating patients and families with other health disorders? The methods used in S.E.E. programs are almost 180 degrees opposite to traditional approaches to patient education, yet the S.E.E. program consistently shows effective patient and family learning and long-term quality of life benefits. Learn how and why these innovative approaches work. Dr. Mittan explains what these differences are and why they are essential to making a lasting difference in patients’ lives.
Program Consultation
- Dr. Mittan can help epilepsy medical practices, epilepsy associations, and other care providers design and implement patient and family information and treatment programs. Dr. Mittan has assisted these organizations with educational programs, information handouts, evaluation programs, pre- and post-surgery programs, and others.
