What is S.E.E. ?

the S.E.E. program

RJM Audience Vancouver 05 1a

Dr. Mittan telling one of his funny stories.

The Seizures & Epilepsy Education (S.E.E.) program is a two-day-long seminar. It includes video, demonstrations, graphics computer animations, a bit of humor, and stories of how real-life people overcame seizures. People really like those stories (see Participant Comments.)

Each day of the program is different. S.E.E. was developed by Dr. Robert Mittan. The S.E.E. program helped pioneer Information Medicine back in 1983. The new science of Information Medicine recognizes that what a person knows of his or her disorder is every bit as important to a successful treatment outcome as any drug or surgery. Sometimes it is even more important!

S.E.E. was created for people with epilepsy, their family members, and for parents of children with epilepsy. S.E.E. is for people who want to take control over seizures, their treatment, and their day-to-day lives. S.E.E. is for people who want real, honest, and complete answers. Answers about epilepsy, its treatments, and how to take back your life. S.E.E. takes the time to explain epilepsy and epilepsy treatment that today’s frantic medical practices just don’t have the time to give you.

S.E.E. is for people who want to be surprised at how enjoyable and empowering two days of learning can be. On their evaluations, people write how much they enjoyed the program’s stories, humor (which they did not expect), and state-of-the-art information. They were surpised at how easy it was to listen for two days. They were amazed they were never bored - something they thought would happen for sure (see Participant Comments.) In fact, the one thing people want added most to S.E.E. is a third day!

The program is easy enough for a sixth grader to understand (and children are invited.) But don't be fooled. The information S.E.E. provides is so up-to-date and sophisticated; the program has been approved by institutions like UCLA to award 14 hours of American Medical Association Category I Continuing Medical Education credit for physicians. S.E.E. has ongoing approval in the U.S. to award 17.6 contact hours of Continuing Education for nurses.

The program is almost always given on a weekend so that most people don’t have to miss work to attend. We are experimenting with presenting the program at other times of the week. We would like to hear what you think about weekday presentations.

The S.E.E. program has won five national awards and an international award for excellence. S.E.E. is the only patient and family epilepsy seminar in the United States that has been shown by two clinical studies to result in long-term benefits in quality of life and medical management for patients and families who attend.

S.E.E. began in 1983 as a part of the UCLA Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. Nearly 30,000 people have attended S.E.E. programs in four countries. S.E.E. sponsors have included over half of the Epilepsy Foundations in the U.S., national epilepsy organizations in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, Veteran Administration Medical Centers, and a host of epilepsy specialty medical centers.
